Robert Graves was born in 1895 in Wimbledon, the son of Irish writer Perceval Graves and Amalia Von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers.

Ronald Arbuthnott Knox (1888-1957) was an English priest, theologian and author of detective stories. He was also a writer and a regular broadcaster for BBC Radio. He won several scholarships at Balliol College, Oxford.
