Biography

Wang Xiaoshuai is a pioneering figure in Chinese independent cinema. Over the last three decades, he has directed 15 feature films along with the acclaimed documentary CHINESE PORTRAIT (2018), which highlights China’s rapid urbanisation and the everyday challenges faced by its people.
Renowned for his diligent filmmaking approach and his focus on humanistic themes. Wang’s works have been showcased at prestigious film festivals, including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, and San Sebastian. One of his most notable films, SO LONG, MY SON (2019), won Silver Bears for Best Actor and Best Actress at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. The film also earned him the Best Director at the China Film Directors’ Guild Awards, the Asian Film Awards, and the Beijing Film Academy Awards.
Recently, his film ABOVE THE DUST was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Film. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Wang was appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in 2005.
