Stef Smith

Stef is an exciting young award-winning Australian filmmaker and established commercials director. Most recently Stef directed the JONES FAMILY CHRISTMAS for Stan starring Heather Mitchell and the Australian Academy-nominated comedy series MONOLOGUE. Stef is the creator, showrunner and series director of Australian Academy nominated, Australian Writers Guild winning, television miniseries IT’S FINE, I’M FINE, hailed by the SMH as “the best Australian drama of the year”. Debuting on SBS after its world premiere at CanneSeries and a sold-out Australian premiere at Melbourne International Film Festival 2022.

Stef’s award-winning, Iris Prize-nominated short film JOY BOY screened internationally at festivals including Palm Springs and the AmPav Emerging Directors Showcase, Cannes Film Festival. It was financed by Create NSW 2017 Generator: Emerging Filmmaker’s Fund and premiered on SBS Viceland and SBS OnDemand in 2018. Stef directed and produced ABC iView sketch comedy series THE LOST TAPES funded by ABC and Screen Australia, as part of their Fresh Blood initiative. Stef is an alumni of the MIFF Accelerator Director’s Lab and a recipient of the 2018 Australian Director’s Guild Commercial & Content Directing Mentorship and is an established commercials director with Photoplay Films winning at Shots Asia for New Director of the Year 2021. Stef has won an Australian Directors Guild award and has had four nominations. She is currently in development as creator/writer on an original drama series with eOne and recently completed writing the Screen Australia funded feature film ANNA ROBI AND THE HOUSE OF DOGS with Maxine Mellor.
