Biography

Simon Frederick is a British-Grenadian writer-director and visual artist working across film, television and theatre, known for his distinctive visual style and culturally driven storytelling.

He created the award-winning BBC documentary Black Is The New Black, whose portrait series became the largest acquisition of Black portraiture in the National Portrait Gallery’s history. He followed this with the acclaimed docuseries They’ve Gotta Have Us and The Outsiders, with his work distributed globally, including on Netflix.

Frederick’s work blends fine art and cinema, exploring identity, love and generational memory, with a focus on how Black life is represented with elegance, complexity and emotional depth.

He is currently developing his debut feature, Cinnamon, marking his transition into authored narrative filmmaking.
