Biography
Ryan is a writer and actor of Jamaican descent from Birmingham, whose work delves into the intricacies of class, sexuality, and race relations within Afro-Caribbean communities through comedy. Part of the inaugural Sky Comedy Rep Festival, his play ‘Boys Who F**k and Cry’ has been longlisted for the BOLD Playwrights Award.
Additionally, his short story ‘Safari’ was commissioned by BBC Arts and Arts Council England as a short audio drama for BBC Sounds and went to win at the UK Radio Drama Festival. More recently, he won the DYSPLA Story-makers residency in 2022 with his script ‘MAN>CODE’, which has gone on to receive the Special Jury Mention at LesGaiCineMad and the Audience Award at AfryKamera, as well as a nomination from the RTS. It premiered at over 24 festivals, including the Academy-qualifying Chicago International Film Festival, BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, BFI FLARE Film Festival, Manchester International Film Festival and at Toronto’s Inside Out Film Festival in 2024.
Ryan has recently completed another script with BFI Hub Midlands for the Stories to Shorts programme and was selected for the Torino Comedy Film Lab, 2025.
