Richard Clark

Writer / Director

Biography

Richard Clark is a director, writer and executive producer whose work spans some of the most distinctive British drama of the past two decades.

He recently completed Charles Dickens’ A TALE OF TWO CITIES, a Federation Studios production for MGM+ / Amazon / BBC starring Kit Harrington, François Civil and Mirren Mack, directing all four episodes of the adaptation, due to broadcast later in 2026.

Prior to this, Richard directed all six episodes of THE CHEMISTRY OF DEATH for Cuba Films / Paramount+ starring Harry Treadaway, and was subsequently commissioned to write and exec produce the second series. He directed eight episodes of WAR OF THE WORLDS for Urban Myth / Disney+ starring Gabriel Byrne, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Elizabeth McGovern – an Anglo-French co-production for Fox Networks Group and Canal Plus that ran for three seasons. Further international credits include the hit show OUTLANDER for Starz, starring Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, and VERSAILLES for Canal Plus.

In 2018, Richard directed all four episodes of the limited series INNOCENT, ITV’s most watched new drama of that year, whilst MIDWINTER OF THE SPIRIT, a three-part ITV horror/thriller starring Anna Maxwell Martin and David Threlfall was nominated for the British Fantasy Award for Best Television Production. His DR WHO episode, The Doctor’s Wife,  was awarded the Hugo Award, the Bradbury Award and the Rondo Statuette, whilst other early credits include LIFE ON MARS, MUSKETEERS, WHITECHAPEL and WHISTLEBLOWERS. Richard began his career in documentary before moving into drama on the strength of his short film, HUNGRY, which won numerous awards at international festivals.

As a writer, Richard co-created the hit ITV drama THE BAY, now in its sixth series. He is currently developing a geopolitical thriller, BEYOND REACH, for Sepia Films, a police thriller, THE BOATHOUSE, and a feature, WASTE, for Rubicon Pictures.

“ITV’s Midwinter of the Spirit has been excellent, a right lark that has still, at times, been genuinely
disturbing”Benji Wilson, Daily Telegraph

festering unease.’Sunday Telegraph

’…likely to scare you stiff…. Eerily convincing.’Observer

‘… a lot of fun, just the thing to both cheer and chill as the nights close in.’The Guardian

‘The tone strikes a perfect balance: serious, but never too earnest or self-conscious, with the horror-movie
stuff proving properly scary, while still neatly combined with the familiar and domestic… an ambitious, and
so far distinctly satisfying attempt to create what might called Middle-England Gothic.’The Spectator
