Mary Waireri

Mary is a Nairobi-born, London-bred writer.  She read History at Oxford University and worked in advertising but soon realised she preferred reality with a dash of fiction. Since then she has honed her taste for bold, propulsive genre storytelling at the NFTS and the Royal Court Playwriting workshop. Her writing has been recognised in various prizes and competitions including Penguin Write Now, BBC Studios, and Austin Film Festival. 

Mary has developed stories for Studio Canal UK and Netflix Africa as part of their Episodic Lab, and was selected for the inaugural Universal and Working Title Writers Residency, where she spent a year developing a variety of feature projects. Her thriller series, ‘Exiles’, is in development with Sony and she is currently developing a sci-fi series with Shot Of Tea and Letitia Wright attached.

Mary loves writing about unruly women, secret histories and extraordinary futures.
