Juan Carlos Medina

Juan Carlos Medina is a Spanish director and writer, whose debut feature film PAINLESS (INSENSIBLES) premiered at TIFF in 2012 and was met with critical acclaim.

His first English-language film THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM premiered at TIFF 2017, and and was the closing film at Sitges Film Festival the same year. Produced by Stephen Woolley and Liz Karlsen, and adapted by Jane Goldman, the film starred Bill Nighy, Olivia Cooke and Douglas Booth, with Lionsgate distributing worldwide. Mark Kermode described his work on the film as ‘a deliciously subversive affair’ and a ‘pleasure to watch’.

Juan Carlos was the originating director on the adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ best-selling trilogy A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES for Sky / AMC with Bad Wolf producing and with Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode starring. He was subsequently nominated for Best Director in the Fiction category of the BAFTA Cymru Awards 2019 for his work on the show. He also served as director on Youtube Originals / Left Bank sci-fi series ORIGIN, which aired in 2019.

In 2020, he directed the full 5-part limited series GONE FOR GOOD for Netflix, based on the book of the same name by Harlan Coben. The series was released in August 2021 to strong reviews and great viewing numbers, ranking as the number one most-seen programme on NETFLIX France and featuring in the top 10 in many other countries for most of that month.

He holds both a US and French passport.
