Biography

FREW is a Composer, Musical Director, Arranger and Orchestrator with over a decade of experience.  Their music has been commissioned and performed on some of the UK’s most prestigious stages, including the Royal Court Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, Sheffield Crucible, Royal Exchange, Bush Theatre and Birmingham REP, as well as in collaborations with groundbreaking companies including Breach Theatre and Middle Child.
 
Their portfolio demonstrates a unique versatility across musical genres and constantly pushing the boundaries of musical dramaturgy and utilising populist forms to engage with political stories.  They are equally happy composing for large scale plays and musicals as they are heading up the music team either supervising or collaborating with composers or songwriters.

Frew has a particular interest in musical dramaturgy and the integration of music into the fabric of storytelling.

The production is immensely enriched by the use of music (composer and musical director Frew).  Music accompanying physical action is reminiscent of the film score, rich and triumphalist

the script is a potent blend of sharp satire and harrowing tragedy, while the musical element (composed by Frew, with sound design from Owen Crouch) features heartfelt lyrics and rich harmonies, played against a euphoric soundscape of 80s synth chords.

Frew gives the 1980s-set first half a propulsive, electro-synth backdrop, as Section 28 comes malignantly into being while evoking bands such as Underworld as the show moves into the 1990s and explores the law’s impact. The music captures a freneticism … the songs are less neatly formed numbers and more outbursts of feeling
