Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia are a filmmaking duo of Sicilian writers and directors.
Their second feature film SICILIAN GHOST STORY - a fantasy drama about the disappearance of a little boy from a small Italian town - opened the Critics’ Week of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. The screenplay won the prestigious 2016 Sundance Institute Global Filmmaking Award, given each year during the Sundance Film Festival “to honor emerging directors from different global regions who possess the originality, talent and vision to be celebrated as the future of world cinema”. SICILIAN GHOST STORY also won the Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) for Best Cinematography and for Best Set Design and was nominated also for Best Directing and Best Production. The film won several awards in different festivals and at the David di Donatello Awards 2018 (the motion picture equivalent to the Academy Award for the cinema, the so called Italian Oscars) the film got four nominations and Fabio and Antonio were given the David di Donatello for the Best Adapted Script.
Their first feature film SALVO premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, winning both top prizes of the Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week , the Grand Prix and the Prix Révélation. It is about a mafia hitman giving sight to the blind sister of one of his victims, “a miracle, in a world where miracles do not happen”. The film had a global release and was presented in the US at the Chicago International Film Festival and in New York City at the MoMA and at the Lincoln Center in the frame of the New Directors/New Films Festival. In Italy, SALVO won the Nastro d'Argento (Silver Ribbon) for Best Cinematography, the Italian Golden Globe for Best Actress and four nominations for the David di Donatello Awards.
