Graduating from Oxford University in 2007 with a Double First in English, MJ Delaney quickly moved on to film and video to explore and explicate a wide variety of subjects of interest to her, from punk pioneer Vivienne Westwood to the comparative challenges faced by thirteen-year-old girls in the United Kingdom, Thailand and Mali. At 26, she created Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind), which went on to become a YouTube sensation, and one of the biggest viral hits of 2010.
MJ was named as one of Broadcast Magazine’s ‘Hotshots’ in 2012, having been commissioned to create content for BBC Comedy, Channel 4 and Funny Or Die. In the same year, she was named ‘Best New Director’ at the BTAA Craft Awards, which has led to extensive work in commercials directing.
MJ’s first long-form film, BEN & LUMP, an original half-hour drama starring Thomas Turgoose, was broadcast on Channel 4 as part of the network's Coming Up talent scheme. The film was very well received by critics and was soon followed by her debut feature film, POWDER ROOM, which was picked up at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and theatrically released by Universal Pictures later that year.
2016 brought MJ’s second viral hit with What I Really Really Want – a global re-make of the Spice Girls Wannabe video promoting gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals. It amassed over 200 million views in a matter of months. Her follow-up in 2017, with young girls around the world performing Beyonce’s Freedom, was MJ’s third film to go viral. Her recent short, MORGANA ROBINSON'S SUMMER for Merman/Sky won the 2018 Bafta for Short Form Programme.
MJ is currently in pre-production on the feature film WE WERE LIARS, adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name and produced by Imperative Entertainment. She is represented for commercials by Merman (UK) and Moxie Pictures (USA) and for long-form projects by United Agents (UK) and the United Talent Agency (USA). Born and raised in London, MJ now resides in New York City.
