Gavin's early work was principally in writing, directing and presenting arts documentaries. Profiles with interviews of Gene Kelly, Jacques Tati, Jean Renoir, Frederico Fellini, Powell and Pressburger, Francois Truffaut, etc., and  documentary studies of Sam Goldwyn and Busby Berkeley. Gavin wrote, produced and presented the series ARENA CINEMA on BBC2 from 1976-1980. He was film critic of THE LISTENER from 1970-1984. He was also contributor to SIGHT AND SOUND, THE LONDON REVIEW OF BOOKS and other periodicals. He is co-author, with Karel Reisz, of THE TECHNIQUE OF FILM EDITING (1968). 

Gavin is married with five children and lives in London.
