Dug James read English and Film & Media Studies at Stirling University.
He began working in the television industry in 1996, initially in the UK where he specialized in entertainment and reality formats for all of the top UK networks. Shows included Survivor, Million Pound Hoax, and Boys and Girls.

During a two year posting to Asia, Dug oversaw the successful launches of Indian Idol and Indonesian Apprentice in addition to executive producing the Idol format in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Moving to Fremantlemedia North America in Los Angeles, Dug served as an executive producer on the incredibly popular American Idol franchise, overseeing the successful expansion of the format into syndication and onto cable. He also worked as an exec on the Simon Cowell American Inventor series.
