Desiree is an extremely talented writer, director and actor who is currently in post-production on her own, hotly anticipated debut 6 x 30’ series, THE BISEXUAL, for Channel 4 in the UK and Hulu in the US.

She created and co-wrote the series (with frequent collaborator Cecilia Frugiuele) as well as directing the entire series – she will also star and Executive Produce. Maxine Peake and Brian Gleeson also star.

Producer, Naomi De Pear of Sister Pictures, said, "THE BISEXUAL will be a shamelessly raw and questioning look at how people are exposed through their sex and relationships and the new rules, pitfalls and prejudices around that.”

Desiree's second feature film, THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, recently premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and won the coveted Grand Jury: Drama Prize. Desiree directed, co-wrote the adaptation of the novel by Emily M Danforth and was an Executive Producer. The film stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Jennifer Ehle and Sasha Lane and was acquired by FilmRise for exclusive North American Distribution and by Vertigo for the UK. It will have its New York premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in April.

"A lot of times when a movie is called “important” it’s hiding the fact that it is boring or dated or loaded with fake drama. Not here. The Miseducation of Cameron Post will be a panacea for gay kids for years to come, so for that our prayers have been answered." ✭✭✭✭✭ The Guardian

"It beautifully articulates the need for young people to realize the validity of who they are, and even more beautifully crystalizes the moment when that starts to happen." Indiewire

"Akhavan is a master at balancing the highs and lows of Post’s story." ScreenDaily

Desiree's first feature film APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, which she wrote, directed and starred in, premiered at The Sundance Film Festival in 2014 and is now available on Netflix. The screenplay garnered Desiree a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for “Best New Screenplay.” The film holds a 96% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. IndieWire wrote: "Funny, unique, and entirely inappropriate, Appropriate Behavior is a supremely satisfying and irreverent take on the New York rom-com."

In 2017, Desiree played the co-lead role of Sara in Mark Duplass' Blumhouse feature CREEP 2, which received rave reviews. She also played Carol in Channel 4's hit show FLOWERS and will soon reprise her role in the second series.

Desiree's three episode arc on the fourth season of GIRLS aired recently; her role was created specifically for her by Lena Dunham.
